Soweto Kinch’s Jazz Planet is the subject of a new short film from BBC Radio 3. Who knows where it will sail to next? Luckily, you can track its progress on the Marine Traffic website. At the time of writing (October 2016) it’s moored in Hamburg – for the time being, at least. The Stubnitz has toured European city ports from St Petersburg to London, Rotterdam to Riga – all supported by public donations and, more recently, by a successful Kickstarter campaign. Since 1993, however, it has been used more for music than for mackerel – its cargo holds transformed into venues for live performances and exhibitions, as well as lodgings for an ever-changing cast of artists, performers and crew. So far, the rotund room has hosted all manner of performances, including operas by Bellini and Rossini. The owners, the Brunel Museum, naturally invited musicians and other performers to take advantage of their new Grand Entrance Hall’s rather magnificent acoustic. Take a ride in the ramshackle industrial lift that cleaves hopefully to the tower’s stump-like leg (not recommended for nervous types) and you’re greeted by stunning views in a glass-walled room wrapped around the structure’s apex. The concert hall opened in September 2012. Stavanger Concert Hall, Stavanger Stavanger Concert Hall is the main cultural arena for the Stavanger region. The so-called Leaning Tower – a prototype for concrete platform construction – overlooks a rapidly developing area of Stavanger hemmed in by fjords and mountains. Old Stavanger, Stavanger Old Stavanger is located on the west side of Vgen in the city centre and comprises 173 wooden buildings. But it has also spawned an unlikely concert venue on the outskirts of the city. Oil money has built a great deal in Stavanger on the west coast of Norway, including a spectacular new two-auditoria concert hall. Most dramatic of all, perhaps, was the performance of a work by Claude Vivier in which the main character describes his own murder at the hands of a fellow passenger on the Paris Metro. We carried out the acoustic design in cooperation with the Belgian Kahle Acoustics and the Norwegian Sinus AS acoustic engineering companies.One of the pieces on the programme was written especially for performance in the station’s echoing lift shaft, while another saw the audience crowd into a disused tube carriage to listen. We also designed the sound and audiovisual solutions in the building’s other facilities. Depending on the type of the event there can be 700 to 1,400 seats in the hall.īoth halls are equipped with up-to-date stage technology and sound systems. It can host a variety of performances: opera, musicals, rock concerts and conferences. The acoustics have been dampened in the multipurpose hall to enable electronically reinforced music performances. The ceiling can be lowered down up to 6 metres, creating more intimate acoustics. The concert hall is also well-suited for lightly reinforced music performances because the acoustics can be customised with an adjustable ceiling. The main user of the concert hall is the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, and its special requirements were taken into account already during the design phase. One of them has a concert hall with 1,500 seats and the other one has a multipurpose hall with 1,900 seats. The concert hall is comprised of two adjoining buildings. The concert hall with its beautiful marine views is the centre of the Bjergsted culture park where also a high school for culture and dance is located. The concert hall is located by the sea in the Sandvigå district. Its tone has been described as beautiful, personal and close. The acoustics of the concert hall have received praise from musicians, conductors and critics alike. The building has two halls: a concert hall for acoustic music and a multipurpose hall for electronically reinforced music. The opening ceremonies of Stavanger Concert Hall were celebrated in autumn 2012.
